Our Story

16 years ago, John started roasting coffee for the family cafe. The desire at that time was to have the full say over the coffee we were selling and brewing for our customers. We didn’t really know about specialty coffee. We just knew we wanted to roast coffee that was better quality and a bit lighter roasted than what we could get from our suppliers. So, the adventure began roasting gaining knowledge and experience. Love for a Dane drew John to Denmark the third highest coffee consumption per person in the world. There he worked for a specialty roastery for four years. The experience was amazing. Being able to be around such a strong coffee drinking culture which is also very interested and curious about specialty coffee was invaluable.  Please find our coffees on our web shop. As well as our retail display at the family cafe, Qahwa Espresso Bar and Coffee Roasters.

What Specialty Coffee Means to Us.

Coffee which scores at least 80 but usually in the mid to high 80 points. Specialty coffee is in its most basic definition defined as a coffee which scores at least 80 points out of 100. Scoring a coffee is conducted by Q Graders who are highly trained specialists trained to score the coffee based on the quality of the unbrewed beans and the taste of the brewed beans. We are here a Coffee Monger think most coffees don’t really start to taste really good till they score around at least 85 and above. So, you will find most of our coffee’s to be 85 or higher.

Use of suppliers who choose transparent and ethical trade models. Buying a specialty coffee is likely but not guaranteed to be from supply chains which look after everybody especially the farmer and their labour force. To help with this we source our coffees from green bean suppliers who use transparent and direct trade models. To give us the best chance a picking coffee’s which are traded as ethically as possible.

We strive to stock Coffee's we think are:

Exceptional while also being good value for money. One of the barriers to being able to enjoy specialty coffee which is unique and of a high level is often the cost. It’s more effort for us but we are always tirelessly cupping new coffees sent by our suppliers. Trying to achieve this goal as best we can.

Shows unique traits and attributes of its origin. We love all great coffee here at Coffee Monger, but we especially like to stock coffee’s, which have traits an origin is known for.  Even a region within an origin or even a specific farm within a region. Specialty coffee can definitely be considered with this mind set.  Similarly to the way people often think of wine. We would hope if you bought all our coffee’s you would find something unique and different from each of them.

Grown and traded more ethically is our preference. We not only want to provide coffee which is of exceptional standard. But if possible grown and traded with more sustainable and ethical practices.
